It has been just a little less than 100 years since Chevrolet began producing cars and a little more than 70 since it invented the SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle). And in that time, we have come a long way. Introducing the captivating new Chevrolet Captiva.

It was 1936 when Chevrolet invented the SUV. The vehicle was the Suburban - or the 'Burb' to its fans - and it was the forefather of the Chevrolet Captiva, without doubt the ultimate example of this crossover concept.

The idea came from the merging of two concepts related to train travel. Most travel was done by train at the time and travellers arriving at train stations would gladly pay for comfortable travel to the city suburbs and for their luggage to be taken by what were known as 'station wagons'. The Chevrolet Suburban of 1936 was the first merging of these two concepts in a vehicle which could transport eight passengers in comfort, and take their luggage as well.

In 1957, Four-Wheel Drive became available as an optional extra and the off-road capabilities of the 'Burb' began to be enthusiastically enjoyed by weekend adventurers. It was coupled with a powerful V8 which had been introduced in 1955 for the first time, to make an awesome SUV package.

The Suburban continues to be successful in the United States, but the Captiva is designed to appeal to more European tastes in terms of design, styling, configuration and choice of engines.
